My Best Man
Rebecca reminded me of a memory from twenty-two years ago, that I thought would be a nice story to share.
“Veterans Stadium” in Philadelphia was imploded on 3/22/2004.
My Best Man asked if I wanted to watch the implosion live from one of the local hotels. At the time, too much was happening with Rebecca and myself, which made it impossible to attend.
As a child I had so many good times at Veterans Stadium and was even able to play on the field for a couple minutes while I was playing CYO football.
My Best Man knew I was disappointed that I could not attend but did something I will never forget. On the morning of the implosion, he called and left me a voice mail message. The message went something like this.
“Hey man, it’s me. I know you upset that you missed this, so I wanted you to hear it.” Destruction would follow and his voice comes back on the phone, “See you tomorrow.”
At the time we worked together, and I was able to see him that next day.
Not long after this time, I changed jobs and our being able connect everyday faded, but we remained close for the next few years. That was until a disease took him from the world.
My Best Man was a couple of years younger than Rebecca and myself, and his disease mixed with other complications and let me just say, it was a shock how quickly things change.
It is not too often I think of this memory and if Rebecca never mentioned that the stadium was destroyed twenty-two years ago today, I would have never thought about this memory.
Always remember life changes quickly and you never know what memory will stay with you long after one of your best friends is no longer around to make you smile.
ONE Love john
